Barton Flats is the home of a beautiful creek that runs down from the San Bernardino Mountains. It is a not-so-hidden gem beloved by many. Lately, with less staff and more visitors nature has taken a beating. On one recent visit I saw so much trash it brought tears to my eyes. I thought “If not me, then who?” and had vivid memories of tough jobs made easy when Dan Neff was in charge. I got to work, no fuss, no complaining, no excuses, I just grabbed as much trash as I could and hiked it out with me. I returned 4 more times with 33 gallon trash bags and rubber gloves. I’ve hauled at least 100lbs of trash out of there, and I did it because I think it would make him proud.
